How to Disassemble and Reassemble a Sega Genesis Model 1 (HDG)
This guide covers a full disassembly and reassembly of the original Sega Genesis Model 1 (High Definition Graphics version). Useful for deep cleaning, capacitor replacement, or general maintenance.

Tools Needed
- Tri-wing (Y1) screwdriver (or appropriate security bit for Sega screws)
- Phillips screwdriver
- Plastic spudger or guitar pick (optional)
- Small container to organize screws
Step-by-Step Disassembly
- Remove the Outer Case Screws Flip the console over and remove the 6 Tri-wing screws on the bottom of the case.
- Separate the Top Shell Carefully lift the top shell. Important: Rotate it toward you as you lift because the power/LED indicator is attached. (Note: On some units the LED plastic ring may be broken or previously repaired.)
- Remove the RF Shielding Screws Remove the 6 short screws holding the metal RF shielding in place. One screw (usually top right) is often very tight — take your time.
- Remove the Main Board Screws Remove the 2 longer black screws near the cartridge slot area. Then remove the 4 longer screws at the top/front of the board.
- Lift Out the Main Board Carefully tilt and lift the board out. It may catch on plastic posts — go slowly and maneuver it free. You will now have access to the underside of the board and the bottom heat shield.
Reassembly Tips (Reverse Order)
- When putting the board back in, drape the cables neatly and align the board with the plastic posts first.
- Tighten the cartridge slot screws first (personal preference for stability).
- Make sure the volume knob and power switch align properly with their posts when closing the top shell.
- The top shell can sometimes be tricky to seat — be patient and check alignment of the volume knob and power switch.
Additional Note from the Video The Model 1 Genesis uses quite a few screws of different lengths. Keep them organized during disassembly. Some units may have modifications or previous repairs
