How to Install a Low-Cost Internal HDMI Mod on Sega Dreamcast (Hispeedido Kit)

This guide shows how to install an affordable internal HDMI mod kit (Hispeedido brand) into your Sega Dreamcast. This mod provides much better video quality than the original composite or VGA output.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Disassemble the Dreamcast Remove the bottom screws, take off the top shell, and disconnect the ribbon cable (refer to our Dreamcast disassembly guide).
  2. Locate the Video Encoder Area On the main board, find the original video encoder chip (usually a large chip near the AV port area).
  3. Remove the Original Video Encoder Carefully desolder and remove the stock video chip. This is the most delicate part — take your time and use desoldering wick to clean the pads.
  4. Install the HDMI Mod Board Position the new HDMI mod board where the old encoder was. Solder the mod board’s pins securely to the corresponding pads on the Dreamcast motherboard.
  5. Connect the HDMI Cable Route the HDMI cable from the mod board out through the Dreamcast’s original AV port area (some kits include a replacement rear plate).
  6. Reassemble the Console Reconnect the ribbon cable, close the shell, and screw everything back together.
  7. Test the Mod Connect your Dreamcast to an HDMI display and test multiple games. You should now get a much sharper image (typically 480p).

Important Notes

This is a permanent modification.

Image quality is significantly better than composite, but not all games support progressive scan (some will still run in 480i).

Results can vary slightly depending on the specific kit and your soldering skills.
